Following on from our successful satellite conference in Galway, the IFLA Information Technology Section is planning sessions and workshops to provide insight into the role of libraries in the responsible use of AI. We are witnessing the adoption of AI in all aspects of library operations, including public and reference services, automated classification, customer service through chatbots and discovery systems. Vendors are adding elements of AI in library products including discovery and research platforms. IFLA has recognised the importance of AI and the formation of an AI SIG. The role and impact of AI present both opportunities and challenges. The term media imaginaries refers to the cultural work of texts and artefacts, audience engagement and experiences, and the infrastructural work of commercial and civic organisations. How we create, talk about, dislike and dispute the stories and myths, facts and fictions regarding media related issues such as the environment and mobility, platforms and technologies, or inequalities and social justice, is of pressing concern for citizens, media researchers and industry professionals. Libraries are especially impacted during times of national and international conflict. In fact, cultural heritage institutions are often targeted for destruction to undermine the national and cultural identities of those under attack. While the theft of cultural artefacts as spoils of war were historically, under the correct circumstances, in accordance with international law in the early modern period, such practices have been strongly condemned in the modern period. Nevertheless, the international community continues to witness the plunder and destruction of libraries and museums during modern armed conflicts.
